Atlantic City’s sports are mainly limited to spectator events and gambling tournaments. With the rise in popularity of poker, nearly all casinos have begun offering various contests. Some casinos also offer craps tournaments.

Baseball

The home schedule for the Atlantic League’s 1998 baseball champions, the Atlantic City Surf, provides premier local summer fun at the South Jersey shore. Catch the games at Bernie Robbins Stadium, just a few blocks from the beach.

Horse racing

Horse lovers and turf racing fans should make a trip to the nearby Atlantic City Race Course, located on the Black Horse Pike in Mays Landing, about 14 miles from Atlantic City. The track, with a beautiful flower-lined walk near the Grandstand, was the dream of US Olympic Rower John Kelly, and it once enjoyed financial backing from Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. The track is well-known for its popular Matchmaker Stakes.

Boxing, surfing and running

Boxing fans should check listings for frequent boxing matches, often held at the famed Atlantic City Convention Center, located right on the boardwalk.  While those who want to get wet should make the trip to the Atlantic City Inlet, which is renowned for harbouring one of the state’s best breaks, ideal for surfing. Runners should note that the Atlantic City Marathon is held in October, when many runners can be seen training along the boardwalk. Also, all the major casino hotels offer gyms, many with heated swimming pools.
