Anchorage Restaurants
There are good eateries dotted around the city and, as you might expect, the seafood is especially good. There are a growing number of international restaurants with Asian food, in particular, beginning to become more prominent here.
Local cuisine
Fishing is big business here and Anchorage has some of the finest seafood anywhere in the world, so naturally, the local cuisine is heavily focused on the fruits of the sea. Particular favourites include halibut, Alaskan king crab, oysters, wild Alaskan salmon, mussels and scallops, cooked up in a variety of innovative ways.
Some of the great favourites in Anchorage include King crab cakes, delicious and often served with a little Cajun kick, saffron rice or potatoes. Many of the traditional Alaskan seafood favourites are cooked over a fire, or on a modern barbecue, to recreate the flavours of years gone by, with fire-roasted wild Alaskan salmon being very popular.
The Alaskan climate and location makes it rich in berries, similar to northern Scandinavia. Many Alaskan favourites are served with a berry jelly, made from blackcurrants, raspberries and red currants, among others. Berries are also eaten as an accompaniment to meat as well, such as reindeer sausages.
Where to eat
There are good restaurants to be enjoyed throughout the city and alongside the traditional and seafood restaurants. In recent years there has been a boom in a wider range of international cuisine. Thai and other Asian food has grown significantly in popularity here, along with vegetarian offerings.
The Glacier Brewhouse on the corner of 5th Avenue and H Street is one of the most famous restaurants in Anchorage. The specialities of the house include superb fresh seafood and grilled meats, alongside pizzas, cocktails and home brewed beers and ales. It is always busy, so if you want a table, you should make a reservation or settle for eating at the bar.
For a special meal, the Crow’s Nest at the top of Hotel Captain Cook is considered to be Anchorage’s finest restaurant, and alongside its innovative cuisine there are also some stunning views. For a more casual and cheaper meal, Anchorage is dotted with small homely restaurants, with names like Alaska Salmon Chowder House, Arctic Roadrunner, Fancy Moose and Moose’s Tooth, all offering good home-cooked food in a relaxed atmosphere.
For a quick snack, 4th aAenue is a great place to head, where you will find vendors serving reindeer sausages with freshly grilled onions.
