Be Safe in Tijuana

Famous for police corruption and crime, Tijuana is not a very safe city, so you should be extra careful wherever you go. Despite the risks here, those who practice common sense and stay on guard at all times are ensured a pleasant stay in Tijuana.

Safety

Many reports have been made concerning the police extorting money from tourists, especially tourists who look well-off and wear expensive clothes. Do not travel off the main street if you are alone and have lots of money on you. You shouldnt carry anything that will evoke suspicion from the police such as medicine without prescription, weapons or pornography. When you come into contact with the police, speak politely and remember not to offend them.

Pick-pocketing is very common in busy areas, especially around Avenida Revolucion. Easy targets are usually the people who wander alone and do not speak Spanish.

Health

It has been reported that the US-Mexico border has some of the most severe health conditions in the entire United States, and the weakest health infrastructure to respond to them.

Water provided in public places is prone to be contaminated, so make sure to carry your own mineral water bottle. Dehydration is also a problem in Tijuana when it gets too hot. In addition, HIV is one of the main diseases in Tijuana, making it essential that you protect yourself.

There are many hospitals and pharmacies around Tijuana, and most of them require prescriptions from a licensed doctor in order to issue medication, but some also accept prescriptions from the US.

Travel insurance

It is essential that you take out travel insurance prior to visiting Tijuana. The city is vibrant and exciting, but there are also many elements of crime and corruption. By taking out travel insurance for yourself and your family, you can rest assured that your belongings and your medical treatment will be covered in the event of an emergency.
