Things to do in Cancun

Cancun’s appeal to the majority of tourists can be found in its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. It is a true haven for sun-lovers and water sports enthusiasts. That being said, the areas immediately surrounding the city are home to stunning nature reserves and protected parks. There are numerous cruises allowing you to enjoy the city at night as well as nature tours during the day.

Cenotes

Cenotes are natural wells that have formed over the centuries, with many being found across Cancun. Some are completely open and are similar to lakes, while others are cave-like structures, completely underground. They can be visited by tourists, swam in and explored. They are perfect for a cool down after a day in the hot sun.

Chichen Itza

This is one of Mexico’s most prominent archaeological sites, housing ruins dating back to the Maya people. Chichen Itza is 100 miles away from Cancun, but well worth the visit. You will find all of the ruins open to visitors as well the chance to enter the ancient pyramids. This ancient pre-Columbian city was once the centre of worship for the Maya and attracted Mayans for over 1,000 years, who came here on a pilgrimage. Today, Chichen Itza is the most visited of all of Mexico’s ancient ruins and is a fascinating insight into the lives of these ancient people.

El Rey

This archaeological site dates back to the post-Classic period, from 1250 until 1521. The ancient city was once a very important ceremonial centre and can be found very close to the heart of the hotel district. Although many of the archaeological relics are similar to those at other sites, this area may have once housed a king’s tomb and is home to some very majestic remains. El Rey translates as ‘the king’, which also suggests regal connections.

Garafon Park

This park can be found on the south side of the city and boasts an area for swimming as well as beautiful scenery, local fish and nature trails. There is a small entrance fee, but once you are in, you can take advantage of the facilities all day. The park is a popular place for boat trips to stop at, so it can get quite busy during lunchtime.

Isla Mujeres

The small island of Mujeres can be reached by a 20-minute ferry ride from the hotel district. It offers a quieter alternative to the busy beaches on the main island, but it still provides many of the same facilities and leisure pursuits.

Tulum

This archaeological site is a 2-hour drive from Cancun. It is one of Mexico’s most important sites and is a must-see for everyone. The remains are set against a beautiful backdrop of golden beaches and clear blue waters, and they attract hundreds of tourists every day. It is wise to stay overnight, so that you can fully appreciate the relics in the morning, before it gets too crowded. Archaeological finds include: the Muyil archaeological site, Grand Cenote, Cenote Calaveras, Dos Ojos Cenote and Tres Rios Ecopark.

Xcaret

This nature reserve is a stunning example of Mexican countryside. The park is home to an impressive amount of flora and fauna, and boasts excellent nature trails as well as swimming and snorkelling opportunities. The park is home to a mini zoo, which can keep children occupied for hours. It is also the site where the daily show of Xcaret de Noche (Xcaret at Night) is performed. This is a song and dance extravaganza detailing the history of Mexico.

Museums

Cancun is not renowned for its abundance of museums, but you won’t fail to be impressed by the museums that are on offer. They include the Cancun Archaeological Museum and Mexico Museum of Popular Art.

The Archaeological Museum will appeal to any history buff as well as to those looking for a cultural experience. It can be found next door to the convention centre and is linked to the National History and Anthropological Institute. Over 100 artefacts are on display, all of which have been excavated from Mexico’s most prominent sites. The museum details pre-Hispanic life in Mexico and is a solid introduction to the archaeological sites.

The Mexico Museum of Popular Art can be found next to Cancun Theatre and hosts exhibits of popular arts and crafts. The works on display are examples of the diversity of the country, with each artist coming from a different area of Mexico.
