Be Safe in Cancun
A holiday in Cancun comes with many safety cautions. Like the whole of Mexico, violent crime is common and petty crime exits on a daily basis. By using common sense and adhering to simple rules, you should enjoy a problem-free holiday. Medical facilities in the city follow international standards and many pharmacies are open 24 hours to help with any minor treatment that may be needed.
Safety
Unfortunately, the whole of Mexico suffers from an exceptionally high crime rate. While crime figures are lower in Cancun than in other Mexican cities, visitors still need to be aware of the significant safety concerns.
Violent crime is common, so it is therefore vital that you leave your valuables at home or in the safe at your hotel. Try not to walk the streets wearing jewellery, or designer clothing. This will act as a magnet to possible criminals.
Only carry enough cash to cover your expenditure for one day at a time and leave credit cards in you hotel safe, as petty criminals such as pick-pockets and bag-snatchers act every day. The most common place for tourists to become victims is on public transport, so be alert whenever you travel.
Rapes, robberies and abductions are fairly common occurrences, so never walk back to your hotel alone after a night out. If you have decided to hire a car and drive yourself in Cancun, always keep your car doors locked and be aware of your surroundings, especially when you stop at traffic lights. It is common for armed robbers to attack when cars are stopped. Toll roads are generally safer than local roads.
Occasionally, visitors have reported being harassed by Mexican law enforcement officials. If you find yourself in this situation, always make a note of the officer's name, badge and car number, as these details are vital if you wish to make a complaint. Scam artists pretending to be policemen do operate throughout Mexico. Again, if you think you are being duped, make a note of the officer’s badge and name.

Health
Visitors to Cancun are advised to drink bottled water only, as tap water is not always safe. You should also avoid ice, as there is no guarantee that it will be made from sterilised water. You should make sure you are up-to-date with all standard vaccinations prior to your arrival in Cancun and always carry insect repellent.
Cancun offers adequate healthcare, which is in line with American standards. Should you decide to travel outside of the city however, not all hospitals meet with these international standards.
If you require medical assistance while on holiday in Cancun, ask your hotel or embassy for advice on which hospital to visit, as there have been cases of patients being overcharged or pressurised into getting unnecessary treatment.
Minor medical ailments can usually be treated by a pharmacist. Pharmacies are found all across the city, with the majority being open 24 hours.
