Getting to Cancun
Getting to Cancun is not a problem due to its international airport. Most people fly into the city, although it is also possible to take a bus or drive. Buses take up to 24 hours from Mexico City, and although you will undoubtedly pass some stunning scenery, the journey time should be taken into account when booking.
Driving is a good alternative and the majority of roads are in a very good condition. Cancun International Airport offers direct services to destinations across America, the UK and Europe, and is the most convenient way to reach Cancun.
By car
If you decide to hire a car during your holiday, you will find that it is very easy to navigate your way around the streets of Cancun. This is mainly due to the fact that it was built so recently. International rental agencies can be found in the city and include Avis, Budget, Hertz and National.
One small factor to be aware of when driving is that the police are well-known for being corrupt and will often stop tourists for minor offences and demand a bribe before the allowing the vulnerable tourists to drive away.

By air
Cancun International Airport can be found 22kms south of Cancun city centre and it is a two-terminal modern hub offering a number of worldwide services. Direct flights are available from London to Cancun as well as charter flights from many other UK destinations. It is also possible to fly to domestic destinations throughout Mexico and to various airports in the USA.
Public buses, airport and hotel shuttles, and taxis offer services into the city centre, and it is possible to hire cars from agencies at the airport. There are ATMs in both terminals as well as bureaux de change counters. There is also an excellent selection of eateries and a variety of shops on hand for last-minute gifts.
Cancun Airport
Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the main gateway for international visitors to the city. It is one of Mexico’s busiest airports and offers excellent facilities as well as serving an extensive list of worldwide destinations. These include: Miami, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York as well as London, Paris and Madrid.
The airport has two terminals, which are connected by an airport shuttle. Terminal 2 has a bank on-site and both terminals offer post boxes, toilets and ATMs. Dining options include fast-food outlets and expensive restaurants as well as snack shops and bar food. There are a range of shops to peruse while you are waiting for your flight including duty-free options and newsagents.
Facilities for disabled passengers include wheelchair access, specially adapted toilets and phones as well as the availability of further help if required.
Cancun airport transportation
Once you have arrived at Cancun Airport, you will find that ground transportation options are fairly limited. Taxis are on hand to take arriving passengers to their hotels, but although they are convenient, they can also be expensive and not the best option if you are on a tight budget.
Public bus routes run into the city stopping at destinations on the way and the airport runs a shuttle service, which will take you and other passengers to your desired hotel. Tickets for this service can be bought in the Baggage Reclaim area. If you are staying at an upmarket hotel, you may find that you have a courtesy pick up from the airport, although this should be arranged in advance of arrival.
