Winnipeg Leisure
Given Winnipeg’s climate, winter sports feature greatly in the city’s sports and leisure calendar. Ice hockey is as popular as everywhere else in Canada, and the city is home to the Winnipeg Jets, which play in the NHL. The 2007 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships are scheduled to be held in Winnipeg.
Curling
Winnipeg is the world's curling capital. Curling is a winter sport in which granite stones are slid along a sheet of ice. Brooms also play an important part. Winnipeg has several curling clubs. If you would like to learn to play or have a game with some friends, most clubs have public ice time. In addition, sometimes tournaments are held in the city, if you are interested in watching a game. In 2002, Winnipeg hosted the World Curling Championships.
Ice hockey
Ice hockey is played all over Winnipeg on the many indoor and outdoor skating rinks. Impromptu games often take place and visitors are welcome to join in. Be aware that it is a tough sport and roughing and cross-checking are the order of the day. Equipment for rent is available at some of the larger indoor rinks.
Golf
Lots of golf courses and golf clubs can be found in the Winnipeg area, suitable for both beginners and more advanced golfers. Often close to central Winnipeg, most golf courses are open to the public and offer a wide choice of facilities and amenities. A number of Winnipeg's golf courses also provide golfing tuition by experienced golf instructors, together with practice areas, driving ranges and golf equipment hire.
