Winnipeg is a very safe city for tourists and you won’t feel threatened or intimidated when walking the streets during the day or in the evening. However, as with anywhere, the city is home to its fair share of criminals and undesirables, and following some basic courses of action should ensure that you don’t fall victim to them.

Most visits to Winnipeg are trouble-free. The crime rate is low, but travellers are advised to take sensible precautions to safeguard their belongings, as they would anywhere. Many winter sports are risky by nature and visitors should make sure they have sufficient insurance cover in case of accidents. Canada sometimes experiences tornadoes between May and September.

Health

No vaccinations are required for travel to Canada. The West Nile Virus, spread by mosquitoes breeding in stagnant water, is a danger during the summer months in rural areas, so insect-repellent prevention is recommended for those visiting the countryside, including Manitoba.

Rabies is a threat and can be spread by small animals such as racoons and bats. Medical care is excellent, but expensive. We strongly advise travellers to take out sufficient medical and travel insurance.
