Toronto is a world-class city and as such, it has accommodation to fit every kind of traveler, from backpackers to business executives. There’s a wonderful selection of elegant historical hotels scattered around the inner-city area as well as incredibly modern and fully-equipped five-star hotels. Whatever your choice, it won’t come cheap. Even budget hotels are somewhat expensive, and then you have to tack on the five per cent accommodation tax and the seven per cent GST on top of that.
Luckily, Toronto is a city where it’s quite possible to get a discount on your room rate if you simply ask. At weekends, in the low season and even if the hotel isn’t full; there is still the potential to get a reduced rate.
Where to stay
Toronto is a sprawling metropolis, and its attractions are scattered all over the place. When choosing a hotel, you should carefully consider what you plan to do during your visit and find accommodation in that general area.
Hotels in the city centre are the best bet if you want to experience the energy of Toronto. You will be within a 10 to 15-minute walk from Yonge street and the entertainment district as well as the shops of Eaton Centre, which is considered the best shopping mall in Canada, and the art galleries and bars of Queen West. Hotels in the city centre are geared towards international travellers, which is not surprising given that over 100 languages are spoken in the Greater Toronto area.
Alternatively, there are some excellent hotels within striking distance of the city’s main attractions such as the Harbourfront, Rogers Centre, Air Canada Centre and the Royal Ontario Museum. Just 15 minutes drive to the west of downtown you can find the forested neighbourhood of High Park. A large number of quaint bed and breakfasts in old restored Victorian houses are scattered around this area. If you have a car, this may be a good choice for a quieter and greener stay.
When to visit
Toronto’s high season runs from April to October, and hotel rates will be at their highest during this time. However, the summer is when most of the fun festivals, concerts and other outdoor events take place, so it’s no surprise that the city fills up with visitors.
If you can handle freezing cold temperatures and grey skies, then you can take advantage of Toronto’s low season. Hotels often drop their rates by half during the winter, and you can be sure to avoid the crowds. A more pleasant time to visit is the autumn, especially late September and October. The leaves change colour, the weather is fine and the city is mainly full of locals.
