Be Safe in Ottawa
From a holidaymaker’s perspective, Ottawa is a safe city in which to take a trip, and those planning either a summer or winter holiday here are presented with very little in the way of serious health and safety concerns.
Arranging holiday insurance ahead of your vacation can provide some peace of mind that in the event of any unfortunate episode that requires expense, the insurance company will reimburse you.
Safety
Ottawa, as a rule, presents few serious risks to the personal safety of visitors; however, it is a big city and as such, it harbours a criminal element of some degree, so all tourists are advised to take a few general precautions to avoid becoming the victim of violent or opportunist crimes.
Take necessary steps to avoid the attention of pickpockets by keeping cash and valuables in hard to reach places and by only carrying with you what is entirely necessary. Bag-snatchers can be thwarted by wearing straps over the head or on both shoulders in the case of backpacks. Take extra care in busy areas such as Byward Market. Avoid confrontations with beggars and street characters, and take public transport in groups if you are female, especially at night.

Health
Ottawa is a modern, well-developed city and presents no obvious risks to the health of either its permanent residents or those visiting the city. Aside from the risks of sexually transmitted diseases, there are few opportunities to catch anything serious or life threatening while holidaying here, and visitors are not required to have vaccinations prior to entering the country, although those travelling from countries with diseases such as yellow fever may be required to carry certificates declaring them free from, or vaccinated against, such diseases.
Those taking winter sports holidays obviously put themselves at some risk of injury and are advised to ensure they have adequate training in their intended discipline ahead of taking to the slopes.
The quality of healthcare in hospitals and medical centres is high, although treatment is expensive, so visitors are highly recommended to cover themselves with an appropriate travel insurance policy that has ample provision for medical expenses, prior to embarking on their trip.
