Getting to Montreal

In terms of transportation options, Montreal is an extremely well connected city, with road, rail and air options available. While most foreign visitors arrive by air at the city’s busy Montréal Trudeau Airport, many US citizens arrive via Greyhound bus, private car or choose to make their own way here via Canada’s well constructed rail network.

By car

Montreal is well served by a number of major highways, and visitors choosing to make their way here by private vehicle or rental car will find routes to the city are well signposted. The main Trans Canada Highway provides access from Quebec City and destinations east as well as from Toronto, Ottawa and westerly destinations. From New York, US Interstate 87 provides access, becoming Highway 15 as it crosses into Canada.

By rail

Access to Montreal via Canada’s rail network is a convenient and speedy means of reaching the city with VIA Rail providing regular and efficient services (tel: +1 514 989 2626). Services are available from Quebec City, Toronto and Ottawa, and connections with America’s AMTRAK network are also available.

By bus

Greyhound Canada provides bus connections to Montreal from all major Canadian cities, with regular services throughout the week. From the US, you can also take Greyhound services from a variety of cities and pick up a connecting service on the Canadian side of the border.

By air

Montréal Trudeau Airport is the chief air gateway into the city and is a busy facility, serving close to eight million passengers per year. The airport is located 25kms west of the city and is well served by a variety of ground transportation options. Visitors arriving at or departing from the airport will find a modern facility with plenty of passenger services and amenities.

Montreal International Airport

Montréal Trudeau Airport is a modern single-terminal airport, with a significant annual passenger throughput and a reputation for providing efficient air travel to domestic and US destinations as well as to a variety of other places around the world. Air Canada is the country’s national carrier, providing the largest number of incoming and outgoing flights.

Passenger facilities are excellent and include all essentials such as ATMs and bureaux de change as well as other services aimed at comfort and relaxation. For dining and refreshments, there are a number of options including fast-food outlets such as Burger King and regular eat-in restaurants such as Boulevard Café, Café Bar Bon Voyage and Brûlerie St Denis. For shopping, a large number of stores are available, with popular names such as Virgin Books and Music, Sunglass Hut, Tie Rack and Swatch.

Montreal airport transportation

A shuttle service provided by Aérobus links the airport with downtown Montreal, with regular departures throughout the day (tel: 514 842 2281). Visitors booked to stay at reputable hotels are able to take advantage of a complimentary shuttle bus that departs from the terminal forecourt.
