Be Safe in Calgary
Calgary has a relatively low crime rate compared to other cities in North America, and most visits to Calgary are trouble-free. All of Calgary is considered to be safe during daylight hours, but the east part of downtown - east of Macelod Trail and City Hall, becomes unpleasant at night. Tourists would not necessarily be in physical danger here, but you most likely would feel uncomfortable with some obvious signs of poverty and destitution.
Safety
If walking as a couple or a group, you will feel comfortable when walking in the ‘mainstream’ part of the downtown after dark. If you are a solo female traveller however, you might be better off confining your after-dark walk to Stephen Avenue Walk, which is well lit, served by a range of casual to smart restaurants and is frequented by restaurant and theatre patrons at night. If you are a lone woman and want to venture beyond Stephen Avenue Walk after dark, consider taking a taxi cab.

Health
Health conditions and medical facilities in Calgary are very good; however, visitors are also just as likely to fall ill or have an accident in this city as they are anywhere else. Foreign tourists should take note that the medical insurance schemes in their respective countries will not cover medical treatment in Canada, and should therefore be sure to purchase separate insurance to cover any medical emergency that occurs while on holiday.
