Be Safe in Tel Aviv

The main thing that comes into everyone’s mind when they think of safety in Tel Aviv is the conflict between the Israeli army and Palestinian insurgents. However, the number of related incidents in the city itself has been minimal. Once you are actually in Tel Aviv, you realise that the fear for safety is more hype than anything else.

Safety

Travellers should maintain a high level of vigilance and keep up-to-date with developments. Beware of suspicious packages in public places and suspicious behaviour on the part of people around you. Also be aware of pickpockets, like in every big city; however, regular crime rates are much lower in Tel Aviv than they are in most other cities of a similar size.

Many embassies are located in Tel Aviv, and if you see a suspicious object (‘hefetz hashud’), report it to the nearest security guard. As in all major cities in the world, always exercise common sense, like avoiding dark alleys at night. Tel Aviv is extremely street-safe; women especially will feel comfortable even alone, though they may find that they are wolf-whistled at.

Health

There are no special precautions required for travel to Tel Aviv.  However, travellers are advised to avoid drinking tap water. Bird flu has been discovered in Gaza as well as in a number of towns in Israel. The risk to visitors is very low, but close contact with live birds should be avoided, and insist that all egg and poultry dishes are well cooked as a precaution. Medical facilities are excellent, but treatment can be very expensive, so it is essential that travellers take out full travel insurance.
