York, the capital of the north, boasts a long and revered historical record and once upon a time was one of the most important cities in England. Its long history includes Roman, Viking, Anglo-Saxon, medieval, Georgian and Victorian influences and its citizens have a distinctive Northern disposition.
Transportation to York
The nearest international airport to York is Leeds Bradford International Airport, 31 miles west of York. It serves many domestic and European destinations and is well connected by road. To get to York from Leeds Airport, options include taking a bus to Leeds city centre and transferring to one of the frequent train or coach services heading for York. Travelling time is under one hour. Trains to York also depart from London and all over the UK, and coach services are easily booked, too. For those travelling by car, London is a four-hour drive away. In York itself, regular bus services provide several routes in and around the city.
What to see
The famous York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Europe, dominates the city. Dating from the seventh century, various styles have been incorporated over the 600 years of its development, including an unparalleled stained glass collection. Cliffords Tower, the only remaining part of York Castle, today houses a notable museum, offering an insight into the citys history. The Jorvik Viking Centre nearby, brings the citys Nordic roots to life. The Museum Gardens house some Benedictine remnants of St Marys Abbey as well as several other significant ruins.
Daytrips
Bempton Cliffs RSPB Nature Reserve is located to the east of York and features a number of scenic viewing points where visitors can watch a range of seabirds nesting during the summer months. Castle Howard is one of the most attractive in the UK and starred prominently as a location for the filming of Brideshead Revisited.
Activities and leisure
York is home to the York Racecourse, which hosted Royal Ascot in 2005. Regular races are held throughout the week, and the unique atmosphere makes placing a bet even more exciting. Guided tours of Yorks infamous legion of resident ghosts are held nightly, departing from The Shambles.
