Be Safe in York
Travelling to and around York is by and large very safe; however, visitors are advised to take the usual precautions against opportunistic thieves that would apply anywhere else.
Safety
Bicycle pilfering is quite widespread in York, simply because of the number of people who cycle around the city. But if you take the necessary safety measures and lock your bike to something sturdy, you shouldnt have any problems. Ethnically, York is a city with a predominantly white demography, although its Chinese, Turkish and Polish populations are growing. Visitors with a non-white ethnic background may feel a little out of place at times because of simple demographics. However, race-related violence and crime are practically nonexistent.

Health
Travel to the UK and York presents visitors with no particular health concerns, and both food and water are safe to enjoy. The British National Health Service is first rate; visitors are entitled to free emergency treatment, but fees are charged for routine medical care. A number of countries have signed reciprocal health agreements with the UK including New Zealand, Australia and EU countries. Travellers from other countries (including South Africa, Canada and the US) are strongly advised to take out sufficient medical insurance.
