Southampton Weather

Located in the county of Hampshire on Englands south coast, Southampton is a city that gets a good deal as far as British weather goes, tending towards a warmer climate than more northerly destinations, with its location affording it protection from chilly southerly and northerly winds. The city experiences four fairly distinct seasons, but there is some unpredictability. Generally, summers are warm, winters are cold and spring and autumn are moderate.

Summer

The UKs summer season brings no guarantees of good weather and is at best unpredictable. When the nation as a whole, however, is experiencing favourable weather conditions, then Southampton is among the better places to be, with temperatures often in the 20 C to 25C range.

Rain is a possibility throughout the season, but less likely in the months of July and August. To be on the safe side, its wise to pack a waterproof jacket if visiting at this time. Light clothing is usually suitable for day time wear, although a sweater or light jacket might be appropriate if its a cooler than average summer.

Winter

Southamptons winter season can be a chilly affair, but is generally spared the temperature extremes that are common in more northerly destinations. Temperatures have the capacity to hit freezing, but are normally several degrees higher.

Rain is a dominant feature of the season, while snow is relatively uncommon with no serious snow spells to speak of in the last two decades. While the summer season is the best time to visit Southampton, a winter trip is feasible provided you pack warm clothing and a waterproof winter jacket.
