Southampton Transport
Options for getting around Southampton are good, with the city offering an efficient public bus service and train connections to all neighbouring cities. Taxis are available and while more expensive than public transport, they are convenient. Hiring a car is perhaps the most convenient option, giving visitors the scope and freedom that is not available with public transport.
By train
You can reach a variety of destinations within the Hampshire region via the Southampton Central Railway Station. Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Reading and Portsmouth are easily accessible with regular services, while smaller towns such as Winchester are served by slightly less regular connections.
By bus
Southampton has a public bus service which covers all of the main locations within the city limits and many locations in the suburbs too. Most services start at around 06:00 and run until midnight, although there are night services between the city centre and destinations such as Eastleigh, Hedge End, Millbrook, Portsmouth, Romsey, Thornhill, Waterside and Winchester.
Taxis
Taxis are generally easy to get a hold of in Southampton, with telephone booking, hiring from stands and kerbside hailing all possible. Youll find taxis outside of the airport and the train station, and at other strategic locations. To book by telephone, try one of the following companies: Streamline Taxis (tel: +44 23 80223355); Steve's Taxis (tel: +44 23 80685874) or Abbeytax (tel: +44 23 80322480)
From the airport
From the airport, visitors can choose between trains, buses or taxis. Car hire is also an option for those visitors preferring a little extra comfort and convenience. Alternatively, some of the more reputable hotels provide free shuttle services; those with reservations should check the availability of these services at the time of booking.
