Plymouth Transport
Getting around Plymouth is fairly easy and visitors should find the public transport adequate for the size of the city. There are frequent buses that also connect to many other towns and villages in the area. Quite often however, walking is the most rewarding and practical means of seeing the main sights as they are based in a small and compact area. The waterfront (the Barbican and the Hoe) are within easy walking distance from the city centre.
Plymouth is one of the primary gateways to Cornwall providing access by way of the Torpoint Ferry for the short trip across the Hamoaze and the Tamar Bridge linking the St Budeaux area of Plymouth on the Devon bank of the Tamar to Saltash on the Cornish bank. A small foot-passenger ferry also runs between Stonehouse and the Cornish village of Cremyll; adjacent to the popular Mount Edgcumbe estate.
By bus
The area is served by two main bus companies, First Group and Stagecoach Devon, which cover extensive routes throughout the week. Buses run up to every ten minutes most of the day, six days a week. A more limited service runs on Sundays. A peak day return rate is made for travel before 08.45 on Monday to Fridays and an off peak rate applies at all other times. If you have a car then Plymouths Park and Ride services are the easiest way to get into the city centre. Buses run up to every seven minutes at peak times and operate from the George Junction and Coypool.
Taxis
Although most of the attractions in Plymouth can be covered on foot, taxis provide a more comfortable and convenient way of getting around. There are several taxi and mini-cab companies in Plymouth offering a 24-hour service, including Armarda Cabs and Kingfisher Taxis. It is advisable to make a reservation by telephoning the company directly.
Tourist services
There are a couple of services provided by the local council that are popular with visitors. The Dartmoor Sunday Rover bus and train services run every summer on Sundays from May to September as well as Bank Holiday Mondays. The Jurassic Coast, X53 bus service route runs between Exeter, Seaton, Lyme Regis, Bridport, Abbotsbury and Weymouth.
From the airport
Transportation from the airport to the city is easy and quick. The short journey is best made by taxi which can be arranged in the main airport terminal building. Alternatively, there are bus services available from Derriford Roundabout, which is a ten minute walk from the airport. Car hire is also possible and you can book online to ensure a vehicle.
