Plymouth Restaurants

Although there is a good selection of restaurants spread around Plymouth, the city doesn't have a sophisticated dining area that you would find in other large cities or in continental Europe. The city's regeneration has helped to bring in some top restaurateurs to the area and its spot on the Devon coast ensures that the chefs have access to all the fresh fish, meat and vegetables they could ask for.

Where to eat

The best place for good quality food can be found in and around The Barbican. It offers a great variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, so you shouldn't have any problems finding and choosing something that will satisfy you. One of the best places for fish is Piermaster's on Southside Street, whose kitchen is supplied straight from the nearby harbour. Across the road, the Barbican Pasta Bar attracts the crowds, while Notte Street, at the top of Southside, boasts the inexpensive Revival restaurant, which is a Mexican/Italian/American diner.

For lunch, make sure you call in at Jacka on Southside Street. It's the oldest bakery in the UK, dating back to the 16th century. A few doors along, the Dolphin pub is a local landmark and is always crowded with fishermen in the morning and locals at night. It serves simple lunchtime snacks. Plymouth is home to Tanners Restaurant run by celebrity chefs James and Chris Tanner. There are also some particularly good restaurants in the wider area such as in Gulworthy, Dartmouth and Chagford. As with any major city, there are plenty of takeaway and fast food retailers dotted around the central district, although the food tends to be unmemorable.
