Oxford Leisure

When one thinks of Oxford, images of muscular students rowing along the river come to mind. And in fact, apart from punting a boat along the River Cherwell, there isnt much else in the way of unique sports. Football and rugby are naturally quite popular, and the countryside around Oxford is teeming with lovely walking trails, so you should be able to get in a bit of exercise if you choose.

Boating

Oxfords favourite outdoor pastime is punting on the River Cherwell. At Punt Station you can rent a punt, which is a flat-bottomed boat steered by a long pole and small oar. You can also rent boats at the Magdalen Bridge Boathouse. Boating season runs from mid-March to mid-October every day from 10:00 until dusk. Its all a rather informal affair, so simply head down to the rental station and see if you can hire a boat for the afternoon. Its a great way to see Oxford.

Walking

The Thames Valley is an excellent area for walking. Its not too hilly, and there always seems to be country pub nearby. The Countryside Agency has been maintaining a trail network for years and offers good publications about walking in the region. For a long-distance trek, the Oxfordshire Way runs for 65 miles from Henley to Bourton. But there are also dozens of shorter afternoon walks just outside the city if you want something more casual.

Cycling

Cycling is another excellent way to see the less-travelled parts of Oxford and enjoy some exercise at the same time. There are a number of well-maintained cycling routes in the Thames Valley, including the 98-mile Thames Valley Cycle Route from London to Oxford, the 200-mile Oxfordshire Cycleway around the region, and the 85-mile Ridgeway Path along the Chiltern Hills. You can rent bikes in Oxford and ride as much or as little as you like, but it really offers the best way to experience the lovely rural countryside.
