Oxford is in effect a working medieval city, and along with London, Stratford and Cambridge, is one of the main stops for visitors to England. As a result, the town has a wide range of accommodation in all styles and budgets, although there are fewer choices in the historic heart of the city. If you plan to visit in the summer, make your reservations well in advance, because the town gets packed to the gills.
Where to stay
From converted country houses to restored Elizabethan inns, the area around Oxford is full of wonderful places to stay. Many of the hotels have gone for the historical image by furnishing their rooms with antiques and filling the grounds with English gardens. Others are completely modern, with all the facilities you would find in any major city. If you find the accommodation in Oxford itself fully booked or too expensive, consider staying just outside the town. There are dozens of country inns, bed and breakfasts and small hotels within minutes of the city centre, and if you have a car it can be a pleasant alternative.
The town’s many bed and breakfasts are really the highlight of lodging in Oxford. The standards are very high, and the locations are often top notch. Iffley Road is one of the most pleasant areas of Oxford, as you can walk to the city centre and the nightlife on Cowley Road. Woodstock Road and Banbury Road in North Oxford are also excellent areas for easy city access, though you’ll likely pay a bit more in this part of town. Botley Road is convenient to the railway station and also has plenty of accommodation.
If you need something more modern or private than a bed and breakfast, Oxford has plenty of hotels which can sort you out. If you can, check out the Randolph Hotel, which is Oxford’s premier place to stay. Built in 1864, it’s right in the heart of town and completely first class. For the ultimate modern accommodation, try the centrally located Old Bank Hotel, which is both luxurious and contemporary.
