Getting to Newport

Exploring Newports surrounding area by car can be very rewarding, with gorgeous beaches at Porthcawl and Barry Island just a short drive away. Also a must-see is Penhow Castle, with its renovated period rooms, galleries and battlements dating from Norman times. Alternatively, you can travel to the Fourteen Locks Centre, with its jaw-dropping 160-foot high flight of locks, fine picnic area and easy-to-follow strolls.

With sublime road links, Newport is easily accessible from either Cardiff or Birmingham airports. Passengers arriving at one of Londons airports will find excellent train links from the British capital to nearby Cardiff, from where there are links to Newport.

By car

Wales third largest city is excellently connected by road. The city can easily be reached by car from all of the nearby airports. London is 139 miles (224kms) from Newport; Bristol 30 miles (48kms); Birmingham 93 miles (150kms); Manchester 166 miles (267kms); and Cardiff 12 miles (19kms). Many of the shopping centres which are situated in the citys suburbs provide free car parking, while in the city itself, you can find more than 2,000 parking spaces.

By rail

Newport Railway Station has been operational since 1850 and is positioned in the city centre. The Great Western Line offers high-speed services to Cardiff and London primarily, and also to numerous other cities and towns including: Swansea, Reading and Swindon. Also available are direct train connections to Birmingham, Manchester, Southampton, Derby, Nottingham, Plymouth, Gloucester, Portsmouth, Swansea, West Wales, South Wales valleys and numerous other smaller localities.

By bus

All bus and coach services leave from the central bus terminal, situated on the Kingsway. From here, you have the option to explore localities to your hearts desire. Newport is the terminus for most buses arriving from Torfaen, Monmouthshire and Caerphilly as well as for city bus services, providing links to the valleys of Southeast Wales. The bus station also offers routes that run to Bristol and Cardiff.

National Express operates bus services that run from bays 1-3 to localities across the United Kingdom. Amenities at the bus station include public lavatories, a newsagent and a caf, while both National Express and Newport Transport provide customer service offices at the terminal.

By air

For those travelling by air, the airports of Bristol, Cardiff and London Heathrow are within driving distance via the M4 motorway. The nearest airport is situated in Cardiff. Cardiff International Airport is served by scheduled, budget and charter carriers and also supports general and corporate aviation. Local taxi firms operate frequent services from pick-up points in downtown Newport, while taxi ranks are positioned at Bridge Street and the Central Bus Station. In addition, there are taxi ranks situated on Stow Hill and in Maindee Square. Services from here operate from 18:00 to 06:00.
