Getting to Newcastle
Newcastle is served by an excellent transport infrastructure and is therefore easily reachable via public transport options including train, bus and air as well as by a private car and even by ferry.
By car
Newcastle is clearly signposted from the north, south and west of the country. The city is situated where the A1 and A69 motorways join. The A1 bypasses Newcastle to the west. There are several 'park-and-ride' points situated around the city to avoid the struggle of parking in the downtown area. From these useful points, the bus or metro will transport you into the city for a very reasonable fare. The city has over 10,000 car parking spaces in the centre, though for long-term parking, this may prove rather expensive.
By rail
Great Britain's public railway network is reliable, efficient and extensive, with hourly trains leaving from London's Kings Cross Station (travel time 3 hours). From Central Station, there are direct rail services operated to west coast and Midlands localities as well as destinations in Scotland.
By bus
Newcastle boasts an outstanding bus service system which is co-ordinated by Nexus (tel: +44 870 6082608). Quaylink is a modern new and advanced electric bus service which follows routes between the Haymarket bus interchange, Central Station, Quayside and Gateshead. Buses operate every few minutes, from early morning until 24:00.
By air
Newcastle Airport (NCL) is positioned approximately six miles (9.5kms) northwest of the city on the A696 at Woolsington. The facility offers scheduled services to numerous significant UK airports as well as flights to most parts of Western Europe and Scandinavia.
A high-speed and regular rail link from the airport to Newcastle's city centre is provided by Tyne & Wear Metro. In addition, buses also serve the airport from Haymarket Bus Station and Eldon Square in the city. Metered taxis can be found outside the terminal building.
Newcastle International Airport
Newcastle International Airport (NCL) is situated to the northeast of the city of Newcastle and handles over three million passengers annually to major airports all over Europe and the United Kingdom as well as offering a selection of transatlantic flights.
The airport consists of one sole efficient terminal which serves all carriers with ease and features an outstanding complement of passenger amenities. The facility dates from the 1930s, yet the modern terminal building was constructed in the 1990s and today is sufficiently equipped to handle its huge amount of annual passengers, with Departures positioned on the first floor and Check-in on the ground floor.
Essential facilities for passengers feature three currency exchange services, ATMs in both Departures and Arrivals, left baggage, postal services, lost property, a prayer room, baby-changing facilities and a play area for kids. The international airport also comes with a wide range of shops and eateries which serve refreshments and snacks on either side of security.
