Travel to Liverpool
Liverpool often surprises first time visitors with the fine array of attractions and natural charm which permeates its urban environment. Straddling the banks of the River Mersey, this city is a fascinating and unique corner of England which has rightfully earned itself the title of Europes capital of culture for 2008, an accolade which is reserved for only the best of cities. Liverpool residents are bold and brash and fiercely proud of their distinct regional identity. Easily recognised by the Scouse dialect they speak, these locals are a major part of what makes Liverpool so special among Englands cities.
Transportation to Liverpool
John Lennon Airport handles all of the domestic and international flights into the area. Located just minutes away from the city centre, the airport is connected to the city by taxi and bus. Liverpool also has regular coach connections to London and most other British towns and the train network runs frequently from major destinations in the country. Driving to Liverpool is easy since it lies along the path of several of Englands main motorways.
What to see
One thing which separates Liverpool from other English towns is its special connection with the water. A visit to the historic Albert Docks will quickly confirm the important role the citys ports have played throughout its history. The River Mersey cuts through the town, reminding visitors that this is still a trading town. There are also some excellent museums in the city which reflect the honour of giving Liverpool the 2008 European cultural capital award. Visitors will certainly want to explore the citys maritime legacy, but Liverpool also has some world-class art centres such as the Walker Art Gallery. At the end of the day, however, the local Scousers are the main reason why Liverpool is such a special and unique city. After all, this is the home of the Beatles and two of Englands finest football clubs.
Day trips
Theres enough to do in Liverpool that you shouldnt need to make too many forays into the surrounding countryside. However, if this is your first visit to the northern part of England, you may want to explore more of the region and having a car is the easiest way to see the sights at a leisurely pace.
Activities and leisure
If you say Liverpool, most people immediately think of football. This is a city steeped in a long and passionate love affair with the beautiful game and nearly every local you chat with will have an opinion. To make matters even more interesting, the city is home to two of Englands premier league clubs, Everton and Liverpool. So naturally, most sporting action centres around football during (and after) the regular season. Liverpool is also home to some nice parks and woodlands and with its location on the coast it offers a chance to wander along deserted beaches. If youre a golfer, youll find that the region around Liverpool has some of the finest courses in England, so bring your clubs.
Safety issues
Liverpool has a reputation as a relatively safe and orderly city. There are a few neighbourhoods which should be avoided after dark, but otherwise there isnt much to worry about. Like any large city however, there are plenty of petty thieves who ply their trade. It is strongly suggested that you buy some travel insurance before your trip to ensure that any mishaps dont ruin your holiday.
