Liverpool is a serious sporting town, as any fan of football will quickly tell you. As the home of two premier league clubs, Liverpool and Everton, as well as Tranmere Rovers on the other side of the Mersey, football dominates the citys attention. Each year, Liverpool plays host to the Grand National horse racing event at Aintree, which has expanded over the years into a full-blown festival with live music, drama and other exhibitions. Liverpool is also considered one of the top golfing areas in England, with over 100 courses within one hour of the city centre.

Football

Without a doubt, the number one sport in this town is football. The city is home to two rival premier league clubs and you can bet that every resident cheers for one side or the other. Liverpool Football Club represents the red faction, and is consistently at the top of the table. They play their home games at Anfield, which is one of the great football venues in Europe. Everton Football Club is the citys other top flight team, representing the blue faction. Although they typically play second fiddle to Liverpool, Everton are a decent club in their own right with a long and rich history of football in this town. If you happen to visit during the local derby between the two teams youll be in for a real treat.

Parks

There are a number of excellent parks in and around Liverpool, offering visitors a chance to get out of the city for a bit of exercise and fresh air. Croxteth Hall is one of the main heritage centres in the northwest, but it also serves as a 500 acre Country Park where people can walk and admire the beautiful grounds. Knowsley Safari Park is another interesting place to get out and about, where you can view wildlife from around the globe in a natural setting. A short ferry ride across the Mersey River will take you to Wirral Country Park, an unspoiled landscape of pristine beaches, coastline and breathtaking views over the River Dee and the Welsh mountains beyond.
