Liverpool Transport

Liverpool is a very easy city to navigate, thanks to its comprehensive and efficient public transportation system of buses, trains and ferries run by Mersey Travel. However, most of the citys major attractions are within walking distance of each other so most visitors simply don a pair of comfortable walking shoes, pick up a local map and explore the streets on foot.

By Metro

Liverpools underground train network operates between the citys four main train stations: Lime Street, James Street, Central Station and Moorfields. It provides a pleasant and quick way to get between areas of the city, but with such a limited number of stops, it isnt as useful for short trips.

By train

The train system operated by Mersey Travel is slightly more comprehensive than the underground metro and covers a much wider area. The citys four main train stations act as hubs, with smaller stations scattered in between. Trains run throughout the day but close fairly early at night.

By bus

Liverpools bus service is comprehensive and efficient. Buses run frequently throughout the day and have a much broader schedule of night services. The citys two main bus stations are on Roe Street and Paradise Street, both near the centre of the city. Tickets are available for single fare trips or visitors can opt for the Live Smart pass, which offers unlimited travel on most of the citys transportation systems.

Ferries

Mersey Travel operates a number of ferries, known as Mersey Ferries, which travel between the two sides of the river and around the port area. They are mainly geared towards tourists and offer a great perspective of this city which has traditionally based its identity and economy around the waterfront.

Taxis

There are dozens of taxi ranks scattered throughout the city, including all of the main bus and train stations. Taxis can also be hailed along the street without much trouble. Mersey Cabs, Anfield Taxis and Central Taxis are the citys main cab companies.

Tourist services

Liverpool recently introduced a Live Smart pass for tourists, offering free and discounted entry to most of the citys main attractions, as well as unlimited travel on some of the citys transport systems. A circular sightseeing bus tour and the Mersey Ferries are also included in the Live Smart pass. The card includes discounts at various shops, bars and restaurants around the city, making it a pretty good deal. One and three day passes are available from the citys tourist offices.

From the airport

There is frequent and reliable public transportation from the airport to a number of destinations around Liverpool by way of train, coach, bus, taxi and car hire. Regular express buses run to the city centre, and there is also a drop-off and collection service at Garston railway station. The AirportXpress500 departs from outside the Arrivals area every 30 minutes, taking just 20 minutes to reach the city centre.

Although there is no railway station located directly at the terminal, Garston and Hunts Cross stations are very close and serve the local and regional rail network. Public buses also have direct links with the airport running to Lime Street station throughout the day. Mersey Cabs are ready and waiting at the taxi rank if you want the most direct and convenient transport option.
