Lake District Weather

Despite the reputation as being very rainy, not all days are wet days in England. The Lake Districts moderate and mild climate is positively influenced by the Gulf Stream. Light and pleasant breezes often blow in, and even during a hot summer, the heat rarely gets unbearable for pleasant walking tours.

Snowfall, rainfall and fog

The low height of the majority of the Lake Districts fells means that, even though there is often snow during the winter months, they are snow-free at all other times throughout the year. In general, considerable snowfall only happens from November through April, at the winters peak. Average snow fall on Helvellyn occurs approximately 67 days of the year. Snowfall usually occurs on only 20 days of the year in the valleys in the Lake District, while there are 200 rainy days and 145 dry days.

Hill fog is common and can occur at any time throughout the year. On average, the fells receive about 2.5 hours of daily sunshine, while sunny hours increase to slightly more on the coastal plains.
