Lying in the middle of the English Channel, Jersey is not your average destination, and as such, its lodging reflects its special character. Staying on this island is somewhat like visiting an old friend or relative. There are no big chain hotels or sprawling seaside resorts, and little in the way of budget hostels. What you have is a wonderful collection of old homes that have been turned into bed and breakfasts, along with a spattering of furnished flats, chalets and bungalows. Some of the accommodation has been around since the 13th century, so you will be delighted by the variety of inns and their unique characters. There are more than 200 guest houses on Jersey, so you should have no trouble finding something to suit your tastes. However, advance reservations are suggested during the summer season, and many places close down altogether during the winter.

Where to stay

Jersey has its own hotel grading system, which helps visitors choose an accommodation best suited for them. Hotels are graded from 1 to 5 suns, and guest houses are graded from 1 to 3 diamonds, with the higher number meaning a higher quality of establishment. Due to the unique lodging situation on Jersey, property which can accommodate less than six guests does not have to register with the local government, and thus is not inspected. This kind of lodging includes furnished bungalows, flats, homes and villas, and is handled through booking agents. All other accommodation on the island is subject to an annual inspection which assigns them their grade.

Of the 200 guest houses on Jersey, most of them are traditional bed and breakfasts. Some of the larger inns also serve evening meals. These inns are scattered all over the island, since most of them are old converted homes. However, the greatest concentration of lodging can be found in the main towns such as St Helier, St Brelade, St Peter and Gorey. Among the many standout hotels on Jersey, Longueville Manor is one of the finest. This 13th century Norman manor house in St Saviour has been run by the same family for the past 50 years and offers amazing rooms and equally stellar cuisine and service. Another family-run star is St Brelade’s Bay Hotel, which overlooks the pristine bay of St Brelade’s and has superb facilities, service and cuisine.
