Getting to Jersey

There are really only two ways to get to Jersey, by air and by sea. Jersey can be reached by air from London and most other cities in the UK, as well as from Antwerp and Zurich. Jersey Airport is located a few minutes from the capital, St Helier. There are several sea routes to Jersey from the UK, France and the other Channel Islands. You can also bring your car on some of the frequent car ferries.

By car

You can easily bring your car with you when you visit Jersey. From the UK, there are frequent car ferries from Poole and Weymouth. The journey takes about 4 hours. There is also a car ferry from Portsmouth, and St Malo in France. Ferry crossings are more frequent between April and October.

By air

All air traffic into Jersey is handled by St Peter's Airport, also known simply as Jersey Airport, which is located just 8kms from St Helier. Its the only airport on the island and the most convenient way to get to Jersey. There is frequent service from London and other large cities in the UK on British Airways and a couple of smaller budget airlines. The flight from London takes about 50 minutes. International service is offered from Zurich and Antwerp to help accommodate all the offshore bankers. Taxi and bus services take travellers from the airport into St Helier.

By ferry

Regular ferry service is offered from the UK, France and the other Channel Islands. Car and passenger crossings by catamaran depart from Poole and Weymouth, taking about 4 hours to reach Jersey. A car ferry also runs between Portsmouth and Jersey, taking 10 hours 30 minutes. Condor Ferries is the main operator in the Channel Islands. Crossings are more frequent from April to October, when the high season is in full swing. From France, visitors can depart on passenger and car ferries from St Malo. Passenger ferries also run from Granville and Carteret in France. Ferry service operates between Jersey and Guernsey and the other Channel Islands throughout the year. Visitors bringing surfboards, sailboards or arriving by their own boat must register at the Harbour Office upon arrival.

Jersey Airport

Jersey Airport is just minutes from the capital of the island, St Helier, and offers the easiest way to get here. Over 1 million passengers arrive each year from all around the world. Ten airlines service 25 destinations across the UK and Europe, most of them originating in London. British Airways is the main carrier, but a handful of other UK airlines also offer regular service from the mainland.

The airports single terminal has all the usual facilities which a traveller might need. ATMs and currency exchange offices can be found in the Arrivals area, as well as restaurants, news-stands, gift shops and duty-free shopping. An information desk can be found in the Arrivals hall of the terminal to help with bookings and tourism information (tel: +44 0148 1237836).

Jersey Airport transportation

There are three ways to get from the airport to your destination on Jersey. The easiest option is to simply hire a taxi, which will be waiting outside the main Arrivals area. The cost to most hotels in St Helier is quite cheap. You can also take the public bus which departs from the Arrivals hall every 30 minutes throughout the day. This bus stops at St Aubin, St Peter, St Brelade and finally St Helier. If you have already booked a room in a hotel, it is quite possible that they will provide transportation from the airport to the hotel, so check with your lodging. Car hire is also available at the airport. Despite the small size of the island, traffic makes travelling rather slow, so budget your time accordingly.
