Inverness Transport

Inverness offers only basic public transportation, but if you are walking around the historic city centre you can see almost everything on foot. The public bus system is extensive and easy to use, but most visitors opt for a taxi to take them around the city.

By train

Inverness does not have an inner-city train service, though trains do run between the surrounding towns and villages of the Highlands.

By bus

Some 50 bus routes cover Inverness and its surrounding area. The two main bus operators are Stagecoach Inverness and Rapsons Highland. Only single fare tickets are available, but they are reasonably priced. Most bus routes stop at around 19:00, or greatly reduce their service. Its best to pick up a bus route guide from the tourist office to help navigate the system.

Ferries

The Caledonian Canal connects the Beauly Firth through Loch Ness to Fort William, which gives access to Ben Nevis. Ferry travel within Inverness doesnt exist.

Taxis

Taxis are the most convenient form of transportation in Inverness, especially after hours since most public services stop or become infrequent after 19:00. Taxi drivers are generally known to be honest and fares are reasonable since Inverness is a small town and most routes are direct. The majority of taxis are minicabs, although a number of black cabs are also in service.

Tourist services

A number of boat tours operate out of Inverness to various destinations around the Great Glen. Day cruises are available to look for whales, seals and birds around the Small Isles. Boats also run from Mallaig to Skye and Mull. Afternoon cruises are available to Loch Ness. Another option is a train tour. First ScotRail operates the outstanding West Highland line to Mallaig, and during the summer the Jacobite Steam Train runs on the same route, offering a unique and exciting experience.

From the airport

There arent many transportation choices from the airport to Inverness. Most passengers simply take a taxi for the short trip to their hotel. Highland Country Buses provide bus service from the airport to Queensgate, Ardesier and Fort George. The bus stop is located immediately outside the terminal. Car hire companies are located at the airport. To drive to Inverness, simply follow the signs which direct you straight to the city centre.
