Travel to Glasgow

Glasgow's meaning in Gaelic is the Dear Green Place, which is a fitting name for a city with more parks per square kilometre than anywhere else in Europe. Despite its massive size, it's completely feasible to walk from one side to the other, using one of the many bridges which cross the Clyde River. If your feet get tired, the extensive public transportation system will make the journey easier.

Transportation to Glasgow

Glasgow International Airport handles nearly all of the domestic and international flights into the area. Located only minutes away from downtown, the airport is connected to the city by taxi, shuttle bus and train. Glasgow also has a regular train service from England, as well as an extensive coach service across Britain.

What to see

Glasgow is a revitalised city, thriving thanks to its beautiful urban environment, fantastic nightlife and shopping that is arguably the best in the country. Trendy cafes and preserved old pubs line the streets, offering plenty to see and do after dark and the friendly locals will make sure that you enjoy yourself in this welcoming city. The Burrell Collection alone is worth a trip if artistic culture is your thing. Otherwise, you can simply soak in the medieval atmosphere. Even though it doesn't have an ancient castle or gleaming palace like other cities, its the smaller elements that make Glasgow so enticing.

Day trips

There's plenty to do in the area, and since Scotland is a rather compact country, you can see a lot of it within a days drive of Glasgow. There are lochs, the dramatic coastline, the offshore islands and plenty of pastoral scenery in the lush green countryside.

Activities and leisure

Glasgow is obsessed with one sport: football. The city is home to two of the worlds oldest football clubs, Celtic and Rangers, collectively known as the Old Firm. Whenever either of these clubs is playing in town, things get very lively. Otherwise, you may want to indulge in a round of golf at one of the fine public courses or stunning private clubs. After all, this is where golf was invented.

Safety issues

Glasgow has a reputation as a fairly safe city. There are a few run-down neighbourhoods which should be avoided, but otherwise there isn't much to worry about. During the peak season of summer, the number of tourists increase, offering an opportunity for the city's petty thieves to ply their trade. It is strongly suggested that you buy some travel insurance before your trip to ensure that any mishaps don't ruin your holiday.
