Although it generally sees fewer tourists than Edinburgh, Glasgow gets an increasing number of visitors each year as its reputation as an interesting cultural destination continues to grow. The city has also become a popular location for business conferences, which means that lodging can get booked quickly if there’s anything special happening in town. New hotels, such as the Radisson SAS, open each year filling the growing demand. But it’s still recommended that you reserve your room well in advance no matter what the season. Many of the business-oriented hotels offer reduced rates and specials on weekends, so check around and you’ll likely find some good deals.
Where to stay
Central Glasgow doesn’t seem to sleep, so any hotel in the downtown area will inevitably be noisier than those in the leafy and more upscale West End, where many of the city’s best museums and art galleries are located. However, the advantage to staying in the city centre is that you’ll be within walking distance of the main attractions and plenty of great places to eat and drink. There’s an abundance of luxury accommodation downtown such as the Millennium Hotel and the Carlton George Hotel. You can also find a decent number of more moderately-priced hotels and even a handful of guesthouses if you’re really on a budget.
Glasgow’s genteel West End, which is dominated by the University, is another great area with easy access to the city centre and lots of good restaurants and bars. Hotels in this part of town cover the full range of prices, from the opulent One Devonshire Gardens to the friendly Terrace House Hotel. The Merchant City district is another option, with some of the best nightlife in Glasgow and a number of decent hotels. The medieval area of the city only has a few places to stay, but it has plenty of ambiance. The Southside of Glasgow may feel less convenient, but actually the excellent bus and train network makes it easy to get around. The abundance of hotels and inns in this area are quiet and set in a pleasant leafy environment.
