Be Safe in Exeter

In most respects, Exeter is a very safe city with few dangers or annoyances. However, as with any city, there are always going to be a few pests and criminals, so it never hurts to observe a few precautions in order to protect your belongings and your own well-being.

Safety

Purse-snatchers and pickpockets commit the bulk of criminal activity targeted at tourists. While instances of theft aren't all that common, it's a good idea to be mindful of your cash and valuables at all times while walking in crowded and congested areas. Those carrying handbags are advised to keep the shoulder strap opposite to the hip that the bag rests on, and rucksacks are best kept securely strapped to both shoulders. Otherwise, take care when out after dark, travel in groups and stick to the more populated parts of town.

Dont forget to keep your purse or bag hooked around your foot or arm while sitting down or eating in a restaurant. To guard against pickpockets, keep all of your cash and valuables in your front pockets where you can better monitor them. Just remember that the most touristy areas are also the most likely to be targeted by pickpockets, and being mindful of your belongings is usually all it takes to protect them.

Health

Other than the off-chance of petty theft, Exeter poses very little danger to tourists. As with any well-developed European city, the health codes and water standards nearly eliminate the chance of contracting food-borne illness. If, by any chance, you become ill during your stay in Exeter and you're not an EU citizen, you'll want to have appropriate travel insurance to cover any medical bills. Otherwise, you'll be required to show the necessary documents from your home country in order to take advantage of EU reciprocal agreements.
