Be Safe in Edinburgh
For the most part, Edinburgh is a safe city for tourists, and visitors won't feel endangered or threatened when out and about in the city centre. Even so, the city still has its fair share of crime and taking some basic precautionary measures can protect you from becoming a victim.
Safety
Petty theft is the main threat to visitors and their belongings. Be mindful of your belongings when in crowded places and make sure that you keep an eye or a hand on your valuables whenever you can. If you're carrying a handbag, it's a good idea to wear the strap across the opposite shoulder to guard against purse snatchers.
For the most part, your belongings will only be in jeopardy when you've temporarily lost track of them. Don't forget to keep an arm or a foot through the strap of a bag whenever sitting down in more exposed public places. The best way to guard against pick-pocketing is to invest in a money belt that can be worn under the outer layer of clothing.

Health
Other than petty theft, there are very few problems or risks for visitors to Edinburgh. Health codes match those of any well-developed European city, meaning that the food is sanitary and the water is safe to drink. However, if you become ill for any reason, you'll want to have the assurance of receiving proper medical care. EU citizens wishing to capitalise on reciprocal agreements will need to show documentation of their country of origin, while other travellers will want to have an appropriate travel insurance policy to cover any medical costs incurred.
