Things to do in Dundee
Dundees key attractions are predominantly castles and historic buildings, making it the ideal destination for those with an interest in history, heritage and medieval architecture. Bring your camera and youll be guaranteed to get some great snaps of the citys finest old keeps and fortifications.
Broughty Castle
Situated on the shores of the Tay, Broughty Castle is an historic construction that once served as a fortification to the city in the days when it was one of Britains wealthiest ports. Over the course of its active life, it has changed hands many times until it was eventually bought by the War Office, who utilised the building up until 1949. Besides the inherent interest generated by its history, the castle is also home to a local history museum.
Claypotts Castle
Constructed between 1569 and 1588 by John Strachan of Angus, Claypotts Castle is an historic structure that has managed to retain virtually all of its original features and is both structurally and cosmetically sound. The castle offers an unusual appearance that can be attributed to its combination of two asymmetrical square towers and two circular towers which are situated at opposing corners. The castle was used as a residency as recently as the 19th century but is now unoccupied and only open at limited times for sightseeing.
Arbroath Abbey
Another structure of interesting historical value, Arbroath Abbey was founded in 1178 by the monks of the Tironesian Order and is most famous perhaps for its association with the Declaration of Arbroath, a document in which Scottish nobles swore their independence from England. Visitors can view a copy of the declaration at the abbeys visitor centre, along with a variety of other interesting exhibits.
Verdant Works Jute Museum
This recently restored jute mill has working machinery and gives visitors an in-depth look into the Scottish jute industry, which for those not in the know, is responsible for creating a strong coarse thread out of vegetable fibre. The industry was integral to the city during the 19th century and this fascinating museum explains the intricacies of the processes involved in the production of jute thread. Interactive exhibits and guided tours help to make this one of the citys most interesting sightseeing centres.
Dundee Municipal Pool
If you feel like youve had your fill of historic buildings, then take some time out to visit the Dundee Municipal Swimming Pool, a family-friendly facility that offers an array of water-based attractions including slides, a wave pool and river rapids. The facility is open to all and is a great place for families with children to spend a fun-packed day.
