Douglas Transport
Douglas is a small town and can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle. Public transport options include local buses, taxis and horse-drawn trams.
By bus
Buses are mainly intended for inner-island travel, but there are also several bus stops in Douglas for those wishing to get around the town in comfort. Bus explorer passes are available at travel shops and at some tourist offices. Cash is accepted for journeys and the bus driver can give you change. Timetable brochures detailing bus routes and times can be found at most tourist offices, travel shops and on some buses. They are also available in some town shops free-of-charge. By horse-drawn tram
Known locally as toast racks, the trams travel for two miles along the Promenade. It is the oldest surviving horse-drawn tram service in the world, dating back to 1876. Marked signs symbolising a horse and tram are positioned along the edge of the Promenade. If you want to catch a tram, wait at one of these signs. Tickets can be bought on the tram and are good for a return trip. Services operate from May to August.
Taxis
Most taxis can be phoned for a pick up from a private phone, pay phone or from a free phone, the station and in some supermarkets. There is a public taxi rank at Douglas Bus Centre on Lords street. The Douglas Sea Port also has a taxi rank, with taxis waiting for arriving passengers. Some local taxi companies include: A1 Taxi Group Limited (tel: +44 1624 673 835), Airport Radio Taxis (tel: +44 1624 834 949) and Call A Cab (tel: +44 1624 814 141).
From the airport
Ronaldsway Airport is located around 10 miles south of Douglas. Taxis are available at the rank outside the airport terminal and are always on standby to pick up passengers. There are set fares to take you into Douglas or to other places on the island.
Buses from Port Erin stop at the airport en-route to Douglas every hour. From Douglas, travellers can transfer at the station for other parts on the island. The airport can also be reached from Douglas by taking the Steam Railway to Ronaldsway Station. It is a short walk from the station to the airport therefore this route is not recommended for those with heavy baggage.
