Be Safe in Cardiff

Safety

As far as capital cities go, Cardiff is very safe, but of course, as with any world city, Cardiff is not immune from the scourge of petty thieves and pickpockets, although it certainly does not suffer to the same extent of London or Rome. The golden rule is to keep your wits about you and look like you know where you are going and therefore present less of an easy target for a would-be thief. This is especially so in Cardiff Central train station, busy tourist areas and when going to see a game at the Millennium Stadium.

Always be aware of your belongings and keep them out of sight, particularly cash and cameras. A handbag is best strapped across a shoulder and bum bags should always be kept concealed as they present no barriers to razor blades and quick hands.

Cardiff is generally safe at night, but keep to well lit areas and consider taking a taxi if you’re a long way from your hotel. St Mary street is the busiest and noisiest thoroughfare at night, although the only problems tourist are likely to encounter are bar brawls and scuffles on the street.

Health

As with other UK cities, healthcare here is very good and the water potable. There are several excellent hospitals in the city, including at the University of Cardiff, as well as private clinics and pharmacies. Pharmacies usually open from 09:00 to 18:00 and can often be found in supermarkets and shopping malls. Some city drugstores are able to issue prescription medicines and stay open until after 18:00.

Taking out travel insurance before you leave for Cardiff is a must, where cover for loss of valuables, flights, accidents and healthcare can be had for a reasonable price.
