What to see
The Clifton Suspension Bridge, crossing the Avon Gorge hundreds of feet in the air, was awe-inspiring when it was built in 1864 and is still incredible today. Near the bridge are the Bristol Clifton Observatory and Caves where there is a great collection of Victorian lenses as well as superb views over Avon Gorge.
The area around Bristol Harbor has seen extensive renovations over the past few years and is now a vibrant centre for social life featuring a large number of cosy cafs and chic shopping options. Its the best place to stop at a bistro or find a good restaurant. In addition, the Harbour is home to the SS Great Britain, the worlds first iron steamship.
The Bristol Cathedral and St Mary Redcliffe Church are both historical buildings of significance with long histories and notable architecture. For a more active afternoon, picnic in Queen square, the largest square in England, or enjoy the natural habitats at Bristol Zoo and Gardens.
Daytrips
The city of Bath is only 15 minutes away by train, or you can cycle along a designated bike path between the cities. The beautiful cathedral at Wells is about an hour away by car. Weston-Super-Mare, the nearest sandy beach,is easily accessible by bus. For hikers, Bristol is the perfect base for exploring the Cotswolds.
Activities and leisure
Nightlife in Bristol is fairly laid back although the students of the University of Bristol make sure things stay lively. Most of the evening entertainment options in Bristol are located near the Harbour on King Street and include traditional pubs, cocktail bars and the usual dance clubs. Bristol has some great theatre and no lack of live music, from jazz to house-spinning DJs.
Safety issues
Bristol is a fairly safe city with only a few areas to be avoided after dark. The main danger, particularly for those who like to drink, is getting involved in a brawl. If you are at a nightspot at closing time, try to get a taxi back to your hotel to avoid any problems.
