Be Safe In Bristol

Safety

Bristol is one of the safest cities in the United Kingdom, although, as with any other large city in the UK, there are rough areas that should be avoided after dark. Crime rates are traditionally low in Bristol, yet pick-pocketing does occur, typically involving tourists in busy tourist hotspots.

Be aware of your surroundings, keep valuables out of sight and try not to look out of place. If you look like you know what you are doing, you will be less of a target for a would-be pickpocket.

Carrying your valuables in a bum bag is not recommended. This advertises that you are carrying money and they are very easy to remove from a thief’s point of view via the use of a razor and quick hands. Money should be stashed in a purse or a wallet and put inside a pocket or a handbag that is then strapped across the body.

Perhaps the biggest safety threat in Bristol is the risk of getting involved in a brawl after pub closing time on a Friday or a Saturday night, where hundreds of late night revellers are on the streets after kick-out. If you are among them, it is best to take a taxi back to your hotel. Areas to avoid after dark are Eastville, Horfield, Southmead and St Pauls.

Health

Like elsewhere in the UK, there are no disease epidemics, healthcare is very good and tap water is perfectly safe to drink. Should you need medical attention, any of the city’s hospital will be able to assist you as well as the dozens of pharmacies scattered across the city.
