Birmingham Restaurants

Birmingham excels in the dining stakes and is in fact one of Britain’s premier eateries. There are more than 500 restaurants in the city with world cuisine on offer in terraced cafés, upmarket restaurants, fast food establishments and coffee shops. Birmingham is particularly revered for its balti restaurants, of which there are more than 50.

Where to eat

Balti is a hot Indian curry dish that was derived in Birmingham in the 1970's and the name 'Balti' refers to the steel pan that the curry is cooked and served in. The ‘balti triangle’ in Birmingham encompasses dozens of balti restaurants in the Ladypool  and Stratford Road area, which is just outside the city. Apart from balti dishes, Birmingham also has a Chinatown and a selection of American, Thai, French, Spanish and even modern English, restaurants.

If you are on a tight budget, the Selly Oak area of Bristol Road has many cheaper eateries and is a favourite haunt of Birmingham’s student population. There is a definite slant of English, Indian, Chinese, and Italian tastes here, while the ubiquitous fast food chains and kebab shops can be found nearby. Other popular eating areas of the city include the busy Broad Street area and Brindley Place, which overlooks Birmingham’s famous canals.
