Bath Restaurants

Anyone who cant find food or drink in Bath to suit their pocket, appetite or style either isnt trying or has received bad advice. Ranging from a pair of Michelin-starred restaurants (Lettonie on Kelston Road and the less formal Moody Goose in Kingsmead Square) to a myriad of fast-food joints, Bath has a good selection of eateries.

Local cuisine

Sally Lunns buns have long been baked in Bath. They were first mentioned in verses printed in a local newspaper, Bath Chronicle, in 1772. At that time, they were eaten hot at public breakfasts in the citys Spring Gardens and could be eaten with sweet or savoury toppings. Associated with the city following The Great Exhibition of 1851, Bath buns are still available.

Bath has also lent its name to one other distinctive recipe, Bath Olivers, the dry baked biscuits invented by Dr William Oliver, physician to the Mineral Water Hospital in 1740. Oliver was an early anti-obesity campaigner, and local legend has it that he bequeathed the recipe for his low calorie biscuits to his coachman, Mr Atkins, along with 100 and 100 sacks of flour. Atkins subsequently opened a shop in Green Street and became a rich man on the proceeds.

Where to eat

With more eateries here than you can shake a baguette at and the attractive River Avon winding through town, visitors and residents alike will not go hungry. However, it is almost impossible to eat or drink by the riverside other than at the small Riverside Caf to the side of Pulteney Bridge.

The unpretentious Bathwick Boatman serves straightforward food at reasonable prices. Lunch is the time to find value for money at the top end of the market, as many restaurant prices are cut to approaching half of the evening cost. However, so many restaurants also mean that prices are invariably competitive, though Tilleys keeps costs down and quality up by only serving starter portions and house wines. Most bars and pubs serve food too. Schwartz Bros takeaway features funky music and the best burgers in Bath.
