Istanbul Transport

Istanbul has a solid public transportation infrastructure which includes an underground and overground rail system as well as an extensive bus service and a large selection of taxis serving the city. A rental car is also a good way to get around, giving you considerably more freedom than other transport alternatives.

By Metro

A modern, underground rail system operates services from Taksim to Levent and from Aksaray to Esenler Otogar as well as to the airport. Services are fast, efficient and moderately priced as well as being easy for visitors to use.

By train

A light railway system serves a variety of destinations including Aksaray, the airport and the main bus station. The service is modern and efficient, having only been in operation since 2002. A tram service meanwhile serves the European side of the city, with two separate lines operating. A modern line runs from Kabatas to the suburbs while an older line with traditional, old-fashioned tram cars operates between Beyoglu and Taksim Square.

By bus

Public bus services cover a large part of the city and the suburban areas. Tickets need to be purchased from kiosks prior to boarding the bus; it isnt possible to pay the driver. Buses are generally not air-conditioned and they can get hot and crowded during the summer season.

Taxis

Yellow cabs are abundant and can be hailed anywhere in the street, however visitors should insist that drivers use the meter to avoid being ripped off. Exit the vehicle if the driver tries to use the famous meter not working excuse. Night rates for taxis are 50 per cent higher than day rates.

Tourist services

Plan Tours (tel: +90 212 230 2272; website: www.plantours.com) offers hop-on hop-off bus tickets allowing visitors to take self-guided tours of specific areas and they also organise city sightseeing tours with English-speaking guides.

From the airport

From the airport, visitors can reach the city by metro, light railway, bus, taxi or by hotel shuttle. Transport methods are convenient with travel to the city centre normally taking around 30 minutes.
