Travel to Bodrum

Turkey's prime seaside tourist resort, Bodrum is charming and features whitewashed stucco hillside houses and beautiful landscapes. The city also attracts plenty of fun-seeking party-people in the summer.

Transportation to Bodrum

Travellers to Bodrum can fly to Bodrum Airport, 36 kms away from the town and accessible by car or taxi via a scenic coastal road. Turkish Airlines have five daily direct flights from Istanbul, in addition to one direct flight from Ankara and connecting flights from other major domestic cities. HAVAS provides a transfer service by bus to Bodrum and taxis are also on hand. Buses are an inexpensive way of getting to Bodrum from destinations around Turkey. Ferries dock here from the island of Kos in Greece, taking 50 minutes, while faster hydrofoils take just 20 minutes.

What to see

St Peter's Castle, in the middle of Bodrums two harbours, is the citys most prominent landmark. The castle is home to the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum. Here, visitors can see a range of shipwrecks which have been reassembled for exhibiting. These occupy several buildings in the castle. In the chapel, the East Roman Ship dates from the 7th century AD. The old ruins of the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, are another popular attraction in Bodrum.

Daytrips

Bodrum is a fine base from which to travel around the ruins of Ephesus, Pamukkale, Dalyan and Kaunos as well as Priene, Miletos and Didyma. The region is also home to numerous beaches. Torba, just eight kilometres from Bodrum, features a long beach and the remnants of an old Byzantine monastery.

Trkbk, a picturesque hillside village, is also a popular spot with holidaying Turks. The fishermans cove of Gmslk, home to the ancient city of Myndos (partially visible just under the waters surface), is sited at the westernmost tip of the Bodrum Peninsula. The village boasts a range of fish restaurants by the waters edge, offering a lovely atmosphere and an attractive beach.

Activities and leisure

Bodrum boasts a vibrant nightlife, featuring all-night parties put on by club owners. Bar Street is a popular night venue, illuminated by a laser show from the Halikarnas Night Club. During the summer months, hundreds of wooden gullets flock to the harbour, offering trips to the nearby islands or along the Mavi Yoluculu; a seven-day romantic trip along the shorelines of the Mediterranean.

Safety issues

Even though the city is quite safe, you should be watchful when exploring Bodrum and the neighbouring region. Visitors are more prone to accidents when in an unfamiliar environment and on holiday. When visiting Bodrum, we strongly recommend that you take out sufficient travel insurance for you and your family.
