The stunning town of Amasya is where the legend of the Amazon Queen originated from. It is believed that in 1200 BC, Queen Amasis, the leader of a society of women warriors, established Amasya and kept all men out of this area. About 800 years later, Mithridates, a general in Alexander’s the Great army, declared himself King Pontus. In 47 BC, Julius Caesar attacked and defeated King Pontus and from area surrounding the rock tombs cried out the famous words, ‘Veni, vidi, vici,’ meaning ‘I came, I saw, I conquered’. Since then, the Seljuks, Mongols and Ottomans have ruled and the buildings in Amasya, which is reflected in the colourful architecture of a rich heritage.

Gordion, the capital of the old Phrygian Kingdom, is an ancient city about 93 Kms from Ankara. The ruins of the gateway and several houses that once belonged to the royal family can be seen here. The tomb of King Midas, the second largest in the world, was also discovered here and is an interesting site to visit. Gordion has its own myth that is focused around the legendary Gordion knot. It was said that this knot could only be untied by the true master or ruler of Asia. When Alexander the Great invaded, he did not untie the knot but instead cut it with his mighty sword and thus won the battle and became a great warrior and leader. Gordion also has a fascinating museum where visitors can read about the myths and rulers of this area thousands of years ago.
