Daytrips
There are many options for daytrips from Lucerne and the lake presents some of the best of them. A paddle-steamer cruiseon the lake can be combined with a cable car or cogwheel ride to the awe-inspiring Mount Pilatus, where views of the Alps, the lake and Lucerne are simply breathtaking. Those with cars can take a drive into the mountains to discover medieval villages and unforgettable mountain scenery, where some of the worlds best and most attractive ski resorts reside. Many remain open in the summer as well as duringthe winter to catch the hiking tourists.
Activities and leisure
Most leisure activities in Lucerne in the summer are based on the lake, where sailing, paddle-steamer cruises and rented rowing boats are all on offer; several beaches near the town allow for a dip in the lake. Hiking and biking are also very popular summertime activities here and when the mountains fill up with snow in the winter, skiing takes over as the number one activity.
Safety issues
Lucerne is a safe and healthy city, but it is advisable to be vigilant for pick-pockets wherever you are visiting, especially during festivals and around major attractions. Driving in foreign climes and on the opposite side of the road also presents a greater risk, with the approach roads to the ski resorts in the regionbeing particularly difficult sometimes. We therefore recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting Lucerne.
