Gothenburg (Gteborg in Swedish), the second largest city in Sweden, is located on Swedens beautiful west coast, which gives the city its wonderful harbour. Called the Natural Gateway to the West, Gothenburgs harbour is an essential artery for Sweden. This charming citys appeal is enhanced by canals and parks, and among its attractions is a collection of good museums and northern Europes biggest amusement park.

Transportation to Gothenburg

Landvetter Airport is located 26kms east of Gothenburg and offers frequent connections from and to Copenhagen and Stockholm. The Flygbuss (Airport Bus) provides frequent connections to the airport from the city. By rail, the Oslo-Copenhagen express train stops in Gothenburg. Trains also arrive from Helsingborg/Malm and Stockholm. Buses arrive here from Helsingborg (3 hours, 30 minutes), Malm (4 hours, 30 minutes) and Stockholm (7 to 8 hours).

By sea, Stena Line offers sailings from North Jutland (3 hours) and Harwich in England (24 hours). It is also possible to drive yourself from Malm or Helsingborg via the E6 north. From Stockholm, take the E4 west to Jonkping and continue west through Bors to Gothenburg (470kms).

Key Attractions

Gothenburgs Konstmuseum is an impressive art museum with a good collection of modern art. Equally impressive, Rhsska Konstsljdmuseet is a museum featuring a massive display of European furnishings, china, glass, pottery and much more. East India House, also known as the Museum of Gothenburg, offers a good insight into the history of the city and has unique displays from the Viking era.

Children wont want to miss the largest amusement park in northern Europe, Liseberg Park. Also of interest is Botaniska Trdgrden (Botanical Gardens), offering a beautiful respite from the city, with a variety of carefully cultivated landscapes.

Daytrips

If you have had enough of the city, you can rent a car and head north to explore the Bohusln coast or visit Halland, the Swedish Riviera, by heading south. Nearer the city, the Gothenburg archipelago is made up of Vrng, Brnn, Styrs, Varg and other populated isles, which boast a pedestrian-friendly ambiance with delightful fishing cottages. Vadstena, east of Gothenburg, is set along Lake Vttern. This pretty town is home to the Renaissance castle of Vadstena Slott.

Activities and leisure

Kungsportsavenyn, also called Avenyn (Avenue), is a lovely place to stroll around. It attracts many visitors in winter, as it is heated by underground pipes that make the snow melt quickly. Here, you can find plenty ofpleasant outdoor cafs that provide a good perch from where to watch the passers-by. Shoppers should visit Nordstan, the biggest shopping mall in Scandinavia, and Kungsgatan/Fredsgatan, the longest pedestrian mall (three kilometres) in Sweden.

Driving on snow and ice can pose great risks and you should remain on your guard. Tourists are always more prone to accidents when in an unfamiliar environment. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance for you and your family when visiting Gothenburg.
