Things To Do In Zaragoza

Zaragoza has many worthwhile and varied attractions for all ages, from impressive palaces and churches to fun amusement parks loaded with white-knuckle rides, and colourful gardens. Zaragoza retains elements of its Roman past including part of the impressive city walls and the Roman baths, while several quality museums display artefacts from throughout the ages.

El Pilar Cathedral (Basilica del Pilar)

The 18th century Basilica del Pilar is located in the centre of Zaragoza and is unmissable, with its two large towers. The basilica is one of Spains largest churches and it contains a holy chapel and a stunning altarpiece. The interior of the church is very impressive and is resplendent with intricate architecture, colourful old frescoes and alabaster sculptures. For an unrivalled view of the city and river, climb to the top of one of the basilica's towers.

Misericordia Bullring (Plaza de Toros de la Misericordia)

Also hailing from the 18th century, the Misericordia Bullring is one of Zaragozas most important landmarks and is an immense structure. The bullring can hold up to 10,000 spectators and has recently been refurbished. It stages numerous events throughout the year and is impressive, as a building, in its own right.

Roman walls (Murallas Romanas)

In true traditional Roman fashion, the all-encompassing city walls once encircled the old part of Zaragoza (about two miles in length) and came complete with lookout towers and impressive defensive attributes. Although there is only a small section of the walls left, it is easy to discern the sheer magnitude of them from the remaining section in the centre of the town, which lies next to the statue of Augustus.

Baths Museum (Museo de las Termas Pblicas de Caesaraugusta)

Although not as impressive as the remains of the Roman baths found in Bath, England, the Baths Museum in Zaragoza shows how the Romans once spent their leisure time and also comes with numerous interesting artefacts and relics. One of the highlights is the intricate scale model of the complete site that shows the original layout of the baths.

Zaragoza Museum (Museo de Zaragoza)

The very impressive Zaragoza Museum is located in the heart of the city and contains Zaragozas most important art and some striking archaeological treasures. The Fine Arts section is the highlight of the museum, displaying some eye-catching exhibits including paintings and sculptures from many prominent Spanish artists.

Palacio de la Aljaferia

Apart from the Roman walls and baths, the Palacio de la Aljaferia is one of Zaragozas most important historical attractions. It is a stunning Muslim palace that dates back for almost 1,000 years and features some beautiful architecture. Today, the palace is the convening place of the Aragonese parliament.

Amusement Park (Parque de Atracciones)

A big hit for families with children, the Parque de Atracciones is great for the younger members of the family, with its many roller coaster rides and fairground-type atmosphere. There are also swimming pools and water slides here and many rest and play areas as well as cafs and restaurants.

Primo Rivera Park (Parque Primo de Rivera)

Zaragoza has several top quality parks and the Primo Rivera Park is the citys favourite. This huge park in the La Romareda area of town has some beautiful flora in its botanical gardens as well as nature trails and flower borders, while fountains, ponds and picnic areas add another dimension. Also standing in the park is an impressive monument dedicated to the King of Aragon.
