Valencia is safer than the likes of Barcelona and Madrid, although visitors should not leave their common sense at home. Tourists should remain vigilant, especially in crowded areas and at bus and train stations, as the usual menace of pickpockets and scam artists in the city are a constant irritaion.

Other areas where you should remain particularly vigilant include at major tourist attractions such as museums and monuments as well as at ATM cash machines and in hotel lobbies. Refrain from carrying too much cash, use travellers cheques for the bulk of your money, carry just one credit card and leave extra cash, cards and passports in the hotel safe. Have your valuables well secured on your person and not all in one place. Also, be wary of strangers who approach you in busy city squares or at the beach and don’t leave valuables unattended in cars, even when they are locked.

Health

Valencia is a safe city health-wise, with no tropical diseases or water-borne threats and a good complement of hospitals and pharmacies – pharmacies are denoted by green crosses hanging outside the building. In addition, the tap water is safe to drink, although visitors may prefer bottled water due to the different minerals in Spanish water, which may cause stomachs upsets.

The usual precautions regarding heatstroke and dehydration apply on the beaches in the summer; drink lots of water and use a brand-name sun block. Citizens from the EU visiting Spain can receive free healthcare on the reciprocal healthcare agreements that are in place throughout Europe. Citizens visiting from other countries that have no reciprocal agreement with Spain should arrange for extra medical insurance or make sure it is included in their travel insurance package.
