Travel to Torremolinos
Situated on the Mediterranean coast, in Spain's Costa del Sol region, Torremolinos is a thriving tourist centre. It began as a small fishing village and remained so until the 1950s, when the tourist industry began to increase. Today, the resort area of Torremolinos is dominated by high-rise buildings, while the nearby village of La Carihuela has preserved the historic roots of this now booming region.
Transportation to Torremolinos
The small Torremolinos Airport is primarily used by charter flights, and is not the preferred point of access for the city. Most flights are routed through the nearby Malaga Airport, which is only a 10-minute drive away. This is a two-terminal facility with all the services and amenities expected from a modern airport. Incoming flights hail from a great number of Spanish and European destinations. Airport taxis are readily available, and the fares are fixed and include applicable surcharges levied by the airport.
An electric train connects Torremolinos to Malaga, with onward travel available to Madrid. Trains depart all day and well into the night. Regular buses connect Torremolinos to Malaga, and again, onward travel to Madrid is available, with the journey taking about 6 hours.
A good network of roads connect Torremolinos to several of Spain's primary destinations. Departing from Malaga, take the N-340/E-15 westbound and follow the signs; the same road continues on to Marbella. It's possible to drive from Barcelona as well, with the journey taking 9 hours; just head south on the A7, followed by the A92, until you arrive at the E15, where you head east to Malaga. Departing from Madrid, veer south on the E5 and join the E902, and finally the E15.
What to see
Most of the resort's attractions revolve around the beach, whether this includes enjoying the scenic promenades, historic glimpses into the region's history or just relaxing and enjoying local cuisine in sight of the water.
La Carihuela is the old fishing village which has played a significant part in Torremolinos' history. Things slow down in La Carihuela, and the resort feel of Torremolinos is lost to an historic quaintness and laid-back atmosphere. The seafront promenade stretches from La Carihueala all the way to Playamar Beach and is lined with eating, drinking and shopping establishments.
Another pedestrian thoroughfare, San Miguel, is located in the town centre. Here, modern shopping meets old-world markets in an historic setting. Several cafs sell drinks and food including fried fish. After nightfall, the bar scene takes centre stage. Torremolinos is also home to the Costa del Sol's largest water park, which opened in 1984. The park features a number of rides and attractions, with constant updates to keep the experience fresh. It's located 10 minutes drive from the city centre.
Daytrips
While much of Torremolinos caters specifically for pedestrians, there's a great deal to see outside the resort. With plenty of coastline to explore as well as nearby villages with a less touristy feel, it really pays to have a rental car so that you can fully explore the Costa del Sol area.
Activities and leisure
Visitors come to Torremolinos for one reason only: to enjoy the white sand beaches. Whether wanting to relax or take part in exhilarating water sports, the beach caters for all. Fresh seafood is an important part of local cuisine, and the most well-known local dish is pescaito frito. The nightlife is thriving, with a multitude of discos, nightclubs and Flamenco dancers. Most night-time venues can be found on Palma de Mallorca Avenue.
Safety issues
By and large, Torremolinos is a safe place for travelling. The biggest threat and nuisance to visitors is petty theft and pickpockets. It's always wise to take special care to safeguard your belongings, especially when sunbathing. Water sports also increase the risk of bodily injury. We strongly advise that you take out a travel insurance policy to protect you and your loved ones.
