Tenerife Weather

The Canary Islands get their name from the spring-like temperatures which dominate throughout the year.  The used to be called the Fortunate Islands and this is tell used as a nickname.  With an average temperature range between 20°C and 22°C, Tenerife has truly delightful weather. In the winter, temperatures never drop below 15°C  and during the peak of summer, daytime temperatures rarely top 30°C . The island’s balanced climate is a result of the warm, dry Passat winds from the northeast combining with the colder sea current from the north.

Regional Variations

The southern half of Tenerife is generally warmer and sunnier than the north, where the mountains block the Passat winds and trap the humidity, therefore creating more rainfall. This is the reason why the northern part of the island is much greener. With such a varied climate, the island experiences all kind of weather. In the mountains, above the clouds, the lunar moonscape gives way to snow on top of Mount Teide, where days are hot, but nights are cold. Below the clouds, the island has a subtropical environment, with warm weather and sporadic rain.

Season Weather

Whatever time of the year, Tenerife has nearly perfect weather. With its range of scenery, you can bask on the beach in the morning and tramp through the snow on top of Mount Teide in the afternoon. Naturally, the peak seasons, around the New Year and during summer vacation, are the busiest times of the year to visit. Consider visiting during the spring or autumn when the crowds are less.
